I’m Hector Rivera – Welcome
If you’re here, you’re probably curious about Somatic Therapy—or you’re looking for ways to feel calmer, more grounded, and at ease in your own body. I completely understand.
For much of my life, I’ve seen how stress, anxiety, and unresolved trauma can weigh people down. As a registered nurse with over 30 years of experience, I’ve worked with thousands of individuals from diverse backgrounds. And one thing I know for sure: our minds and bodies are deeply connected. My background and why this matters
I’ve spent over 40 years in healthcare, including 4 years as a nursing assistant and 8 years as an orderly in a locked psychiatric facility, before becoming an RN. I have nearly 30 years of experience as an RN in a medical/telemetry unit, caring for patients with conditions such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and gastrointestinal problems—while working daily with patients in crisis, families under intense stress, and visitors struggling to cope.
I witnessed first-hand how emotions and behaviors can escalate when people are struggling—and how often it’s the body that shows the signs first. That experience gave me a deep understanding of the link between our emotional state and how we physically respond to the world.
I’m not a licensed somatic therapist, but my career has given me a unique perspective on the field. I’ve seen how traditional approaches to healing can sometimes miss the bigger picture. And I’ve also seen how body-based practices—what we now call Somatic Therapy—can help people reconnect with themselves and move forward in life. Why I built this site
I created Discover Somatic Therapy as a space where anyone can learn about this powerful approach in a way that’s practical and approachable.
Here’s what you’ll find here:
This site isn’t about perfection. It’s about small, consistent steps that help you feel safer, calmer, and more at home in your own body.My promise to you
I write everything on this site with one goal: to make Somatic Therapy accessible, easy to understand, and easy to use.
I’ll never make big claims or tell you there’s only one “right” way to do this. Instead, I’ll share practical tools and insights you can try on your own. Some will work for you. Others might not—and that’s okay. Healing is a personal journey.A little about me outside of work
I’m also an author, and writing has always been my way of processing life and sharing experiences. My first two books, Perched on the Rooftop and The Guardian in the Corner, emerged from difficult childhood experiences that ultimately led me to discover somatic therapy. I base these stories on real events that carry elements of mystery and ghostly encounters. Some readers may find them unsettling, so consider this a gentle warning. If you’re curious about that journey, I welcome you to read those books. I also wrote "Somatic Exercises for Beginners" and am currently working on additional books about somatic healing.
Outside of healthcare and writing, I love running—I’ve even completed two marathons—and traveling, having visited 27 countries so far. I seize every opportunity to explore new cultures and places. I’m originally from Honduras, and my culture and experiences growing up there have shaped the person I am today. Sharing this here feels like an extension of the work I’ve done as a nurse—helping people take better care of themselves.Let’s start this journey together.
If you’re ready to learn more about Somatic Therapy, you’re in the right place. Take a look around, try a small exercise, or just read a bit to see what resonates with you. Even a few minutes of somatic practice can begin to shift how you feel.
Thank you for being here,Hector Rivera, RN, BSN
